Die Dokumentation zum Schicksal der ‘Barnes Foundation’ [IMDb, zugehöriges WiKi hier]
Widerliche Niederträchtigkeit wird nüchtern geschildert : wie die Barnes Foundation wegen vermeintlicher finanzieller Schwierigkeiten gegen jegliche juristisch klar definierte Fakten schlichtweg aufgelöst wird um einem Museum in Philadelphia unvergleichlichen Glamour zu geben.
Über die Finanzmacht und Unredlichkeit wird berichtet — nie polemisch interpretiert. Dennoch bleibt diese Dokumentation dann doch paradoxerweise ein emotional Herz-zerreissender Bericht über die wohl bedeutsamste Kunstsammlung des Späten 19. und Frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Barnes kaufte aus erster Hand, etwa direkt von Matisse und er kniete sich ‘rein, in die Materie der Avantgarde, der Kunstszene in Europa. Das Beste vom Besten nur wählte er aus. Er kannte die Szene, lernte fortwährend dazu und so formulierte er nicht ohne Grund, in weiser Voraussicht wohl auch, das Credo seiner Stiftung : “The Barnes Foundation would attack … the enemies of intelligence and imagination in art, whether or not these enemies are protected by financial power or social prestige.’
Der Nachgeschmack dieser ausgezeichneten Dokumention wird ein emotionaler sein. Unberührt wird einen diese Filmdokumentation nicht lassen. Allein unvergleichlich charakterisierend schon die Gestiken von Richard Feigen bei seinen Statements. Und durch solche, die Aussagen und Reaktionen auf Fragen und Anmerkungen, beeindruckt die Doku zunächst eher distanziert, umso wirksamer dann spätestens mit dem Abspann, den Danksagungen und Würdigungen und lange noch darüber hinaus.

Hard to find a documentation that does match Robert Hughes’ contributions. ‘The Art of the Steal’ does.
Robert Hughes’ delivered much to the Understanding and Education in Art, and to the field of Art Criticsm. Probably few would not regard it as such but ‘The Art of the Steal‘ does work up to what Hughes presented to us, for instance in ‘BBC Art & Money : The Mona Lisa Curse’ (btw. the DVD of this very BBC series, produced by Oxford Film and Television, never did make it as a release for sale. What happened ? one must ask — given that Hughes’ ‘Mona Lisa Curse’ has received quite some attention, and awards too.)
‘The Art of the Steal’ too has a message that, like those of Hughes’, must not be ignored. In fact, ‘The Art of the Steal‘ has many messages not to be overheard. There are these subtle messages and issues, for example, when Feigen is asked to state upon the monetary values of items in the ‘Barnes Collection’. Feigen’s gestures do speak legion. The director Don Argott kept them uncut. Quite powerful. Message delivered. For good. Fortunately, there are a few cross-references, and links, to further readings. One will appreciate such in particular after having watched ‘The Art of the Steal‘ – presumably more than just once.
